Fujians: The Blue Ocean Legacy is an exhibition tracing the maritime route of Fujians when they travelled to South East Asia in the 1800s. This lesser know “Porcelain Route”, as compared to the Silk Route, marks an era of great impact in religion, commerce, culture and porcelain for South East Asia Chinese. The exhibition will showcase artefacts from Xiamen, Quan Zhou and Singapore. These include replicas of junks that carried our forefathers from Fujian to Singapore; stone sculptures and carvings that trace the influence on religions; and rare porcelain works of art that will be shown for the first time in Singapore.

The exhibition is co-organised by The ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands, and supported by Quan Zhou Museum and Quan Zhou Maritime Museum.

Telok Ayer Street is a significant street for Hokkiens. It is the centre of power for Hokkiens when they first settled in Singapore in the 1800s. It is also where the 8-storey SHHK building is located. The 172-year old Thian Hock Keng temple, opposite the SHHK building, provides a beautiful backdrop to a street parade and food fest which will showcase Singapore’s traditions and culture. Get to sample traditional Singapore Hokkien delicacies and snacks. Be awed by vibrant young Singaporeans in a street parade significant in Chinese heritage and culture. The final Flag-Handing-Over Ceremony will mark the end of the 3-day Convention.

The first World Fujian Convention (WFC) was held in 1994 in Los Angeles, United States. Its objective then was to serve as a networking platform for Fujians from around the world. Over the years, the triennial Convention has held steadfast to its original intention and has expanded to include economic, academic, arts and cultural objectives. It has established itself as a convention of importance for the world’s most prominent and established ethnic Fujians to meet and exchange views.

The 7th World Fujian Convention will be hosted by Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK) from 23-25 Nov 2012 in Singapore.

The first Singapore Hokkien Festival (SHF) was organized in 2006. Its objectives are to promote and preserve local hokkien culture and heritage, especially amongst the younger generations. The 9-day Festival includes a traditional Hokkien food galore, cultural performance, book publication, seminar and exhibition.

Each past Festival has drawn more than 10,000 participants. It is supported by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports. It has earned the accolade of being a Festival that showcases traditions and heritage in a contemporary environment.

World Fujian Convention (WFC) was originally a platform for Fujians around the world to network and to re-establish ties. Over the years, the triennial Convention has held steadfast to its original intention and expanded to include economic, academic, arts and cultural objectives. It has established itself as a convention of importance for the world’s most prominent and established ethnic Fujians to meet and exchange views.

Fujians have travelled where the sea carries them. In the new territories, they raised their families and carry on the values, culture and heritage. They have persevered, worked hard and took risks, and as a result, made significant contributions to the social, economic and cultural developments around the world.

This year, the 7th WFC, organised by Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK), will be held jointly with the 4th Singapore Hokkien Festival. It will be a joyous occasion for Fujians globally to congregate and unite in one accord, renewing ties and fulfilling its corporate responsibility in economic, social and cultural advancement like before. Although the programmes planned focused on multi-cultural traditions and heritage, the venues in which they will be held, from the latest cosmopolitan and iconic landmark, the Marina Bay Sands, to one of the earliest historical sites, Telok Ayer Street, allow each participant to experience the force of dynamism that is present in the host country.

We strive to bring to our overseas and local Fujian friends the most exciting and memorable convention ever, and we hope that each one of them will bring home with him a heart-warming experience.
